General Information About Air Cooled Chiller Units

Air cooled chillers are highly efficient cooling systems used to meet process cooling and air-conditioning needs in industrial and commercial facilities. In large buildings, factories, hospitals, data centers, and production lines, they produce chilled water and circulate it through the system to absorb heat from the environment. The collected heat is then rejected to the outside air through the unit’s condenser section.

Vega Chiller solutions offer practical installation and strong performance advantages, especially in projects where access to a water source is limited or where investment in cooling towers, boilers, and extensive piping infrastructure is not preferred.

How Does an Air Cooled Chiller Work?

Air cooled chiller systems basically operate through a refrigeration cycle. The system absorbs heat in the evaporator, increases the refrigerant pressure through the compressor, releases the heat to the air in the condenser, and completes the cycle through the expansion device.

Main Components

  • Compressor: Compresses the refrigerant and drives the cycle.

  • Evaporator: Removes heat from the circulating water/fluid (this is where the cooling takes place).

  • Condenser (air-cooled): Uses ambient air through fans and rejects the heat to the atmosphere.

  • Expansion valve: Reduces the pressure and allows the refrigerant to return to the evaporator under suitable conditions.

Thanks to this structure, the system operates continuously based on the principle of absorbing, transferring, and rejecting heat.

Difference Between Air Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers

Air cooled chillers do not require a cooling tower or a separate water circuit to remove heat. In this respect, they are more compact than water-cooled systems, can be commissioned more quickly, and offer easier operation in many projects.

Summary of the difference:

  • Air cooled chiller: Rejects heat to the outdoor air (via fans and airflow).

  • Water cooled chiller: Transfers heat to water; requires a cooling tower and additional infrastructure.

Advantages of Air Cooled Chillers

From the Vega Chiller perspective, air-cooled systems are frequently preferred for the following reasons:

  • No water source required: There is no water consumption and no need for cooling tower infrastructure.

  • Installation is more practical: It generally requires less equipment and offers a shorter commissioning time.

  • Maintenance processes are easier to manage: The need for cooling tower maintenance and chemical water treatment is eliminated.

  • Flexible application areas: Suitable for rooftops, outdoor areas, and properly ventilated exterior installations.

Which Industries Is It Suitable For?

Air cooled chiller systems are widely used in the following areas:

  • Manufacturing facilities and process cooling

  • Plastic, injection, and extrusion lines

  • Food production and storage

  • Hospitals and commercial buildings

  • Data centers and critical infrastructure

Choosing the Right Chiller with Vega Chiller

For selecting the most suitable air cooled chiller for your project, the following factors are decisive:

  • Required cooling capacity (kW / kcal/h)

  • Supply and return water temperatures

  • The maximum ambient air temperature at the installation site

  • Type of application: air conditioning or process cooling?

  • Energy efficiency targets (such as part-load operation, inverter requirement, etc.)
